The National Association of Youth Organizations (NAYO) an umbrella association of youth Organizations working in Zimbabwe, in collaboration with Leave No Youth Behind (LNYB) led by 22 youth and students organizations as the National Coordinating Committee is gravely concerned about the post electoral human rights abuses targeting young people from CSOs, Opposition Political Parties, Communities and Students.
NAYO notes with concern the continued shrinking of civic space, the continued violations of individual’s political rights which pose huge challenges in restoring confidence for a meaningful youth participation in electoral processes.
We note with concern the targeting of youth activists and opposition youth members within rural and urban areas as ways to intimidate and instill fear. Notably, some youth leaders in Mashonaland West, Manicaland and Harare received threats and continue to live in fear, this include the students leaders who are being targeted. We call our Government of Zimbabwe to guarantee the safety of youth and students as enshrined in our national constitution.
We continue to urge all political party leaders to uphold the commitments of the National Peace Pledge which they committed to in June 2018. In the same vein, NAYO urges all the youth to refrain from violence as all disputes can be resolved using peaceful and constitutional means.
